Editing is the heart of our business here at Rakestraw Book Design. It’s hard to hand over your baby to someone who is supposed to be critical. I strive to do my very best for you and create a wonderful experience as you go through editing.Please look through our rate sheet and choose the type of help you need. Choosing proofreading when you really need substantive editing doesn't help your manuscript. Thanks!
I do work on more than one project at a time. It allows me to keep my prices lower. Short stories can have a fairly short turn around of one week or less. Full length manuscripts may range between four to eight weeks for most jobs.
I’m happy to send you a Paypal invoice for your convenience, but I do accept checks by mail if you prefer. Payment secures you a spot in my queue.
Our Editorial Services:
Our minimum charge is $30, or one hour of work, calculated by word count and type of editing required.
Proofreading Only
Proofreading checks your manuscript for typos, spelling, capitalization, italics, appearance, duplication, missing content, and other last minute alterations. This is not editing and does not replace the need for editing.
Multiply your total word count by 0.0085 for the total price.
Example: 75,000 words multiplied by 0.0085 ($2.12/page — a page is 250 words)
75,000 x 0.0085 = $637.50
Copy Editing
Copy editing deals with grammar and punctuation. It’s all about the rules. I use the Chicago Manual of Style unless you have another style manual you’d rather have me follow. Copy editing and Line editing are often confused with each other, even though they are very different. Choose this option only if you’re sure this is all you need.
Multiply your total word count by 0.01 for the total price.
Example: 75,000 words multiplied by 0.01 ($2.50/page — a page is 250 words)
75,000 x 0.009 = $750.
Line Editing
Line editing is about writing craft. It deals with things like sentence flow, paragraph structure, choice of words, and any techniques related to language. It includes readability, style, and voice. Copy editing is automatically included with this.
Multiply your total word count by 0.014 for the total price.
Example: 75,000 words multiplied by 0.014 ($3.50/page — a page is 250 words)
75,000 x 0.014 = $1050.
Combo Package: Editing + Proofreading
All of the above in one package. Copy editing, line editing, and proofreading of the final result.
Multiply your total word count by 0.02 for the total price.
Example: 75,000 words multiplied by 0.02 ($5/page — a page is 250 words)
75,000 x 0.02 = $1500.
Content Editing
Worried about things like pacing, characterization, showing vs. telling, tension, point of view, story arc, plot points? Perhaps a content edit is in your future. Multiply your total word count by 0.03 ($7.50/page — a page is 250 words)
75,000 x 0.03 = $2250.
In a Rush?
Need your material edited yesterday? I’ll put a rush on it for $250 extra. For rush jobs that must be completed in two weeks or less, full payment is required upfront. No discounts on rush jobs. Rush jobs are not always possible, depending on my work load.
